Your purpose, then, plainly stated, is that you will destroy the Government, unless you be allowed to construe and enforce the Constitution as you please, on all points in dispute between you and us. You will rule or ruin in all events. - Abraham Lincoln 27 Feb. 1860
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of office on which I am about to enter. - Congressional Oath of Office
So it’s come down to this? Because your party couldn't repeal a law; one that was lawfully legislated by both Houses, signed by the President and litigated in the Federal Courts up to, and including, the Supreme Court and found to be legitimately constitutional? A law based on ideas you claim to champion and previously introduced by legislators from your own party. Therefore, you have decided to “take your ball and go home.”
Because of your actions, the properties held in trust for the entire nation can no longer be accessed. Because of your actions, monitoring of the active volcanoes in California, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Hawaii and Alaska have been curtailed, putting citizen’s lives and property at risk. Because of your actions, severe weather monitoring has been disrupted, putting citizen’s lives and property at risk. Because of your actions, disease monitoring has been reduced, putting citizen’s lives at risk. Because of your actions, monitoring of near Earth asteroids and other potentially hazardous space objects have been curtailed, putting the entire planet at risk. But what is the value of your fellow citizen’s lives, balanced against your need to make a futile political point?
Not only are you risking the lives of your fellow Americans, your cavalier attitude has put the economic well being of millions of your fellow citizens at risk. Not only because of the 800,000 citizens furloughed by your failure to act, also there are tens of thousands of people and hundreds of communities who make a living in support of government activities or by their proximity to the many natural wonders that are held in trust by the government. Yet you would see these people, as they begin to recover from one of the worst economic downturns in history, slammed down again, as though they were villains in a staged wrestling contest one might see on cable television.
Your actions are shameful. You bring discredit upon yourselves, the United States Congress and the United States as a whole. Poisoning the body politic with rancorous recalcitrance, hopeless hyperbole and pusillanimous politics will only redound negatively upon yourselves. Take heed of this warning.
To paraphrase the greatest Republican President, Abraham Lincoln: You will not abide the enaction of this legislation! In this event, you seem determined to destroy the Union; and then say, the great crime of destroying it will be upon us. That is cool. A robber may hold a pistol to my ear, and mutter through clenched teeth, “Stand and deliver, or I will kill you, and then you will be a murderer.” To be sure, what the robber demanded of me-my money- was my own; and I had a clear right to keep it; but it was no more my own than my vote is my own; and the threat of death to me, to extort my money, and the threat of destruction of the Union, to extort my vote, can scarcely be distinguished in principle.
